From having just one tertiary education institution at the time of independence from the British, Tanzania’s higher education system has been steadily improving over the past few decades. Currently, it has 10 public universities and dozens of private higher education institutes. However, with a population of nearly 60 million in 2020, Tanzania’s higher education system, although growing rapidly, is severely limited in quantity. For this reason, many students seek international education either for subjects and majors that are not available in Tanzania or simply to gain an international education experience. Out of sheer necessity as well as due to several education policies, India has a strong higher education system that is currently growing both in size and quality. With universities fast approaching 1000 in number and colleges numbering over 37,000, educational opportunities in India for international students are limitless. Students thinking of studying abroad in India from Tanzania will have ample choices of programmes and institutes to choose from.

Difference between Tanzanian and Indian education systems

For those who are going to attempt studying abroad in India from Tanzania, a look at the key differences between the countries’ education systems would be helpful.

  • Pre-primary, primary, secondary (ordinary), and then secondary advanced form the basic education structure in Tanzania. Education is free for all citizens up to the secondary level in the country. Post this, students have the option of completing their tertiary education at one of the universities within the country or getting international education like studying abroad in India.

  • While India has had a 10+2 education system for a while now (10 years of school + 2 years of junior college), under its New Education Policy the country will be moving to a 5+3+3+4 system by 2021. The final four years will now be categorised as secondary stage and cover grades (or standards) from 9 to 12. After completing this, students can begin their higher education, with a bachelor’s degree programme lasting four years, after which they can take on a master’s degree and subsequently a PhD. Studying abroad in India is now a very attractive option as bachelor’s degrees offer exit options during each of the four years.
